The second job nobody warns you about

If you’ve been carrying the mental load for a while, you already know the strange part. The work is heavy. Describing the work is its own kind of heavy.

I’ve spent years listening to women try to describe a weight they couldn’t fully explain. They can tell me they’re exhausted. What they can’t always do is say why in a way that lands with the person sitting across from them. So the conversation stalls out and the thing they actually needed to say never gets said.

I know that stall personally. After my oldest was born thirteen years ago, I was shocked at how quickly I started to develop resentment toward my husband. It felt like my life changed so dramatically, yet his remained the same. Everything had defaulted to me, and I didn’t have the language for it yet.

The person carrying the load is usually also the person expected to explain it and then go find the fix. That’s a second job stacked on the first one, and almost nobody names it.

So when people ask me where to start, I send them somewhere that does the explaining for them.

Start here: get a real measurement

You can’t renegotiate something you can’t see.

Before any conversation with your partner goes anywhere useful, you both need the same picture of what’s actually happening in your house.

The free Care Load Assessment is the fastest way in. It takes about three minutes, you don’t need an account, and it gives you a clearer picture of how a subset of day-to-day responsibilities are really split between you. Over 8k  of people have taken it. You can start here.

The Care Load Report is the deeper version, and it’s the one I’d point you to if the free quiz confirmed something you suspected but you’re ready to actually tackle this together. It includes a comprehensive sorting of all the tasks that go into running a home and family and your results also generate a partner guide that you can give to them to do the explaining for you. It takes about thirty minutes, you both get access to take the assessment (but it works either way)..

What you get back is a personalized map of your mental, physical, and emotional load in visuals and plain language, targeted next steps, so you don’t just get interesting information without knowing how to implement it in you life. The piece I’m proudest of is the partner  guide. It’s a customized and detailed report of your perspective written to your partner, in language that makes sense to them and won’t stir up defensiveness. They can read it or listen to it. You don’t have to build the argument, soften it, time it right, or deliver it perfectly. It’s already written.

We built the report on a study of 537 women plus interviews with the partners who weren’t carrying the default load, because I wanted to understand both sides of the gap and not just one. Learn more about the Care Load Report here.

Better Share., the app, is where you go if you want ongoing support after the measurement. It’s the system I wished existed when I was in it. One subscription covers both partners and includes a Care Load Assessment (not the report)  short Experiments that surface why the same tension keeps resurfacing, Same Page for the thoughts you want to share without scheduling a whole conversation, and Touch Bases, which are guided check-ins with some actual guardrails so the conversation stays on track. Or read this together: the Rebalance Guide

Everything above starts with you. This one starts with both of you, and it’s free.

Kelly Hubbell and I wrote the Rebalance Guide because we kept watching the same conversation collapse in living rooms across the country. One partner is depleted and can’t fully explain why. The other is genuinely trying and sincerely confused about why things still feel off. Research puts 71% of the household cognitive load on mothers (Journal of Marriage & Family, 2024) while fathers are far more likely to believe it’s split evenly. Nobody’s lying. Most of the work is invisible, and you can’t own what you can’t see.

It’s one document across six chapters, and it’s built to be read together rather than used as evidence in an argument. Inside:

  • What the mental load actually is, meaning the ownership rather than the tasks, with the research that names the gap
  • Word-for-word conversation scripts you can use this week
  • A Mental Load Audit you fill out together, organized by category of ownership instead of by chore
  • The honest chapter on why even 50/50 can still feel like 150%
  • The guilt nobody talks about, and permission to put it down
  • What life looks like once real support is in place

Books worth your time

Different books land for different people. Pick the one whose approach sounds like it’s speaking to you.

  • A Better Share by me. Written for couples who want to understand why the load falls the way it does and how to work through it together, without putting men on the defensive.
  • Fair Play by Eve Rodsky. One of the first books that gave women language for what they were carrying, and the origin of the card-deck method you’ll see referenced all over this space.
  • Drained by Leah Ruppanner, PhD. A sociologist’s breakdown of the mental load into eight distinct types, built around a Mental Load Audit that’s genuinely useful.
  • What’s on Her Mind by Allison Daminger. The researcher who put “cognitive labor” on the map, drawing on in-depth interviews with couples. If you want the rigor and the why, this is your book.
  • How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids by Jancee Dunn. Funny, personal, honest. The one to hand a friend who’s deep in it and needs to laugh through the frustration.

When you want a human in your corner

Sometimes a book or an app isn’t the thing. Sometimes you need a real person helping you sort through your specific situation. A few coaches whose work I know and refer to:

  • Zach Watson, the Invisible Labor Coach, works specifically with men on understanding and sharing the mental load. He’s a certified Fair Play facilitator and a former teacher, and it shows in how he builds his frameworks. If your partner keeps saying he just doesn’t see it, Zach is who I’d send him to. Learn more here.
  • Brian Page of Modern Husbands works with couples on the domestic load and the money side of shared life, which are almost always tangled together. He’s an accredited financial counselor and Fair Play certified. If your husband engages better with another guy who’s been there, Brian’s a good door. Learn more here.
  • Nikki Goldwater of Root & Branch Parenthood is a therapist as well as a Fair Play practitioner, which makes her a strong option if the mental load conversation is tangled up with anxiety, a difficult birth, or the identity shift of early parenthood. She’s Chicago-based and sees clients virtually. Learn more here.

When the conversation keeps falling apart

You try to bring up the load, and within two minutes it’s spiraled or your partner has shut down, and the actual issue never gets touched. If that’s the pattern in your house, my audio course Done with Defensiveness teaches a three-step framework for the moment reactions kick in, on both sides, so the conversation can keep moving. It’s the framework that turned defensiveness in my own marriage from a regular event into a rare one. Learn more here.

When you need another set of hands

Sometimes the answer isn’t better communication or a better system. Sometimes the answer is another human physically doing the work.

You’re reading this at Sage Haus, so you may already know what Kelly and her team do. I want to say it anyway, as an outside voice: Sage Haus is where I send people who are ready to genuinely take things off their plate and get support. They match families with vetted house managers, family assistants, and meal-prep chefs across the US and Canada, and they’ve supported thousands of families doing it. The part I value most is that they teach you how to actually hand work over, so you’re not still quietly managing the person you hired.

This is also where the Care Load Report and the Sage Haus side of things meet. If your report comes back with a stack of “outsource this” flags, that’s simply information about what your household needs. Support like this isn’t a weakness. The highest performers in every field have infrastructure built in.

The real takeaway

You don’t have to figure this out alone, and you don’t have to figure it out in order. Whether you’re just starting to notice the load, sitting in resentment, or already rebuilding something with your partner, there’s a real tool or a real person for wherever you are. There’s no wrong door.
