Holiday stress and everyday stress often have the same root: the mental load that parents carry. If you’ve ever felt like you’re the project manager, chef, cleaner, nanny and emotional glue of your household, all at the same time, you’re not imagining it. The numbers prove it.
Most women spend nearly 22.5 hours a week on unpaid household and caregiving tasks, on top of their jobs or child-rearing. Even in dual-career households, women handle 65% of household labor and 70% of the mental load, from remembering appointments to meal planning. And most moms say they feel like the default parent. I know these numbers aren’t just statistics. I lived them.

Why Holiday Stress Feels Heavier Than Everyday Stress
During a normal week, moms are already carrying the mental load of running a household. Now add gift lists, holiday meals, travel plans, and endless events, and suddenly it feels like a full-time job on top of everything else.
- You’re planning menus and stocking up on healthy snacks while also ordering teacher gifts.
- You’re decorating the house while remembering to RSVP for the classroom party.
- You’re the one keeping track of which family member is flying in when and who needs to be picked up from the airport.
- Also, let’s not mention the “memory-making” and “magic moments” that WE as parents are in charge of to ensure our kids have those “core” memores of their childhood!
It’s a lot. And without systems, it all defaults back to you.
Small Shifts That Actually Reduce Stress
The good news? Holiday stress isn’t inevitable. A few intentional habits can make the season feel lighter:
- Set realistic expectations: Not every tradition has to happen every year. Choose the ones that bring joy, and let the rest go.
- Take deep breaths: Even a minute of grounding before guests arrive helps reset your nervous system.
- Prioritize healthy snacks and meals: Keeping simple, nourishing food on hand prevents crashes and crankiness.
- Protect your mental health: Schedule downtime, even just 10 minutes, to breathe and recharge.
These little adjustments help, but they’re just the start.
The Truth: It’s Not You, It’s the System
Here’s what I’ve learned, both in my own life and working with families through Sage Haus; holiday stress doesn’t come from you not trying hard enough. It comes from not having a system that shares the load.
When I finally admitted I couldn’t (and didn’t want to) do it all, I hired a house manager. But even then, I realized hiring help isn’t enough. Without systems, you’ll still be the one delegating, checking in, and carrying the invisible tasks.
That’s why I created the Home Systems Digital Course + Playbook to help families:
- Confidently onboard household support with clear expectations
- Delegate without micromanaging
- Build routines that run themselves (even during the busiest time of year)
- Reduce stress by taking tasks off your plate for good
Because the reality is… most of what’s stressing you out right now? Someone else can do it, with the right systems in place.

A Holiday Season You Can Actually Enjoy
Imagine a holiday where you’re fully present with your kids instead of silently running through your to-do list in the back of your mind. The fridge is stocked, the house is prepped, and you didn’t have to stay up until 2 a.m. trying to pull it all together. Instead of sprinting back and forth to the kitchen, you actually get to sit and enjoy meaningful moments with friends and family.
There’s space for healthy snacks, cozy traditions, and even a quiet cup of coffee before the chaos begins. The little things, movie nights in pajamas, laughing around the table, bedtime stories by the tree- aren’t overshadowed by exhaustion.
That’s what happens when your home runs on systems, not stress. When the invisible load is shared, you get your time, your energy, and your peace of mind back. And that’s the gift that makes every other part of the holiday season feel lighter.
