An assistant runs your calendar. A house manager runs your house.
A house manager does what a family assistant does and then runs the house. A family assistant or a personal EA takes the admin: scheduling, travel, gifts, the inbox. Valuable work, and it leaves the physical household exactly where it was. A house manager takes the admin and the home: the kitchen, the laundry, the supplies, the vendors, the resets. For most families, that is the role they were actually looking for.
If a family assistant or EA is the right hire, we find those too.

What people are saying
On hiring for the whole household.
“I am FULLY convinced there is no higher leverage hire than an EXPERIENCED house manager/personal assistant.”
Admin + hands
A house manager does what a family assistant does and then goes into the kitchen. One hire instead of an assistant plus a housekeeper plus you.
In the house
A virtual assistant can book the plumber. A house manager lets them in, checks the work and restocks the pantry on the way past.
Flat fee
Not a percentage of salary. One fee for the search, in two payments, whatever the role pays.
The comparison
Family assistant, EA or house manager.
The titles blur, so here is the line we draw: an assistant's work is mostly on a screen; a house manager's work is in the house, and the screen comes with it. If the house is already covered and the gap is admin, an assistant is a great hire, and we find those too.
| Family assistant or EA | House Manager | |
|---|---|---|
| The admin | Calendar, travel, gifts, bookings, the inbox. | All of it, in scope if you want it. |
| Where the work happens | On a screen, often remotely. | In the house, with the screen alongside. |
| The kitchen and the laundry | Usually outside the role. | Usually the core of the role. |
| Vendors and repairs | Books them. | Books them, lets them in, checks the work, pays the invoice if you want. |
| The children | Logistics on paper: the calendar and the bookings. | Logistics in person: pickups, snacks, gear, the after-school window if scoped. |
| Hours | Often 10 to 20 hours, remote. | 15 to 40 hours in the home, built around your week. |

The numbers
An assistant plus a housekeeper, or one house manager.
Put in what an assistant and the household services cost you now. The calculator shows the total, your own hours on top, and the return on one person at the hours you choose.
- The cost today, including your own time
- One role instead of two or three
- Return on the search at one and two years
How the calculator works
- 1What you pay today for sitters, delivery, cleaners and errands, plus the hours you put in yourself
- 2A house manager at the hours and rate you choose, with W-2 costs if you want them
- 3How you find them: a flat fee, an agency percentage, or your own time
- 4The return on the search at one and two years, and the hours you get back

Questions families ask
Before you book.
When is a family assistant the right hire instead?
When the house is already covered and the gap is purely administrative: travel, calendar, bookings, gifts. If any part of the gap is physical, the house manager is the better fit, and the admin can sit inside the role. If it really is all admin, we place family assistants and EAs too.
Can a house manager do EA-style admin?
Yes. Calendar, travel, bookings, gifts, vendors and the household inbox are common parts of the scope. The difference is they also run the house.
What does a house manager actually do all day?
The household: the daily reset, laundry, kitchen and meal prep, groceries and supplies, the calendar, vendors, errands and returns. Admin as scoped.

What will I pay the house manager?
A house manager usually costs more per hour than a remote assistant and less than an assistant plus a housekeeper. Typically $25 to $50 an hour depending on scope and location, higher in New York and the Bay Area. They're a W-2 household employee; we point you to a payroll partner that handles taxes and pay stubs. Our own fee is covered on the call.

How do you vet candidates?
Vetting an in-home hire goes further than vetting a remote assistant. Regional hiring specialists source from local boards and our certified talent pool. Every candidate is screened and interviewed by a human before you meet them. References, a background check and an employment agreement come before any offer, and a one-time re-match is available within 90 days.
How long does it take?
If you're replacing an assistant, we can time the handover. About four to six weeks from an approved job description to your first candidates. If you have a date in mind, we work back from it.
What if it doesn't work out?
If the scope turns out to be admin only, the guarantee covers the change. A one-time re-match with up to two new candidates inside the first 90 days, no extra fee, provided you did the onboarding call and the six-week check-in with us.

Do you cover my area?
A house manager works in the home, so the search is local wherever you are. Families across the United States and Canada, with regional specialists who know the local market. Rural and small-town searches take a little longer; tell us where you are on the call.
